Who We Are (In spanish)

An international community of women religious in the Catholic Church, known as Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ), founded in 1800 by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, with the mission to discover and reveal God’s love in the heart of the world through the serviceof education, justice and peace.

The Giving Fund is a fundraising initiative that provides the financing that sustains the ministries of the the Religious of the Sacred Heart and plans for the future care of their elderly sisters. One of the projects that will be funded throught this fundraising initaive is the the expansion and renovation of the Oakwood Facility in Atherton, California.

The Giving Fund will benefit the elderly sisters who are serving as:
Educators – Trustees – Mentors – Spiritual Directors – Wisdom Figures

Opened in 1971 on the Sacred Heart School campus, Oakwood Retirement Center is one of two dedicated facilities in the U.S. caring for retired religious, and currently houses the largest contingent of elderly sisters. As such, Oakwood is both a serene refuge and powerful resource for the entire Sacred Heart school community. Currently there are 47 RSCJ Oakwood residents on the SHS campus. The "Gatehouse," another smaller shared residence on the campus, houses four other Sisters who are semi-retired. Visits to Oakwood by SHS students, faculty and staff, alumni, and past and current parents are common. Daily morning Mass in the chapel is open to all, and Oakwood hosts most of the Feast Day gatherings for the entire area.

Avila Retirement Community, Albany, New York

Avila Retirement Community, Albany, New York

The Avila Retirement community is an independent senior living residence which shares a full-time Registered Nurse and a part-time Licensed Practical Nurse with Teresian House, also in Albany, New York. It is a place for outreach, companioning, and witnessing to the Society’s mission. The sisters at Avila consider their outreach to other residents an essential ministry. Sharing meals with lay residents and hosting lectures have allowed the sisters to share their lives and spirituality. Alumnae of Kenwood and former and present faculty and alumnae/i of the Doane Stuart School stay in touch with the Avila community. The sisters also participate in monthly meetings with Associates, a time for deepening their lives and sharing for the future.

Carmel Terrace Community, Framingham, Massachusetts

Six Religious of the Sacred Heart reside at Carmel Terrace, an independent living community. The RSCJ view their ministry as both internal and external. Most importantly, they see their ministry as one of presence. Among their internal ministries are visiting the residents, listening, volunteering, serving as Communion ministers and lectors and reading to those who are vision impaired. Externally, they service schools in the Network as mentors, ressource persons, board members and as spiritual directors for Busy Persons Retreats.

The Sarah Community, St. Louis, Missouri

The Sarah Community, St. Louis, Missouri

A residence with independent and assisted living and skilled nursing options. The Sarah Community is home to six Religious of the Sacred Heart in indepedent living apartments. The RSCJ at the Sarah Community consider part of their ministry visiting and listening to other residents, both religious and lay. Some frequently attend liturgies at the nearby Academy of the Sacred Heart, some participate in weedkly gatherings of students. In particular, Sister Margaret Munch, visits on a regular basis and teaches sixth grade students about Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne.

The Teresian House is a skilled nursing home which has 14 Religious of the Sacred Heart residents. It shares a full-time Registered Nurse and a part-time Licensed Practical Nurse with the Avila Retirement Community, also in Albany, New York.

“I have always been grateful for the gift of a Catholic education that my family gave me. It’s probably one of the best gifts parents can give to their child, and it’s one that last a lifetime. My husband and I were then able to give that same gift to our daughter. I donate to the Society of the Sacred Heart to support not only its ministries and mission, but also to contribute tot he needs of the RSCJ in their retirement years. As we all know, the costs of assisted living and nursing care are considerable today and escalating rapidly. Managing these escalating costs and ensuring that the Province has the funds to invest for the future are primary concerns of the Society and the Provincial Team. Financial giving for the tretired sisters’ long term care expenses is a way to help diminish that concern. In addition, such a gift is a meaningful way to honor the RSCJ who have dedicated their lives to education our children in the Sacred Heart tradition.

Investing wisely to sustain and plan for the future support of the elderly sisters

  • $2.5 Million is designated for the medical and personal care of RSCJ in long-term care with
    debilitating diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

  • $3.5 Million is designated for the maintenance, upkeep, and leasing costs of RSCJ retirement facilities.
  • $4 Million is designated for nursing care staff and medical personnel who work in the retirement facilities.
